How to find your printer's IP address on HP and Brother printers

4 min read · Updated · PrinterErrors editorial team

Where do I find my printer's IP address?

Look on the printer itself. Touchscreen models show the IP address in their network or wireless menu, and HP and Brother printers can print a network configuration page from the control panel that lists the address. HP printers also show it in the HP app, under the printer's network information.

HP describes the IP address as an identification number that your router assigns automatically. That means the printer has to be connected to the network before it has one to show. If you plan to use the HP app, the phone or computer running it must be on the same network as the printer.

How do I find the IP address on an HP printer?

HP documents three ways. Use whichever matches your printer. How reports are printed from the control panel can vary by printer model.

01HP app: click the image of your printer, then click Network Information. Alternatively, scroll to Product Information, click More information and reports, then click Network.
02Printers with a touchscreen control panel: open the Wireless Summary or Network Settings menu on the control panel to see the IP address.
03Printers without a touchscreen: press the Information button on the control panel to print an Information Report, then find the IP address on the printout.

How do I print a configuration page on an HP LaserJet Pro P1566 or P1606dn?

These LaserJet Pro models print a Network Configuration Page that shows the network status and the printer's IP address.

01Turn the printer on.
02Wait until the Ready light is on and the printer is idle and silent.
03On the control panel, press and hold the Go button. Release it when the Ready light starts blinking.
04The Network Configuration Page prints. Read the IP address from it.

How do I print the Network Configuration Report on a Brother printer?

Brother printers list their network settings on the Network Configuration Report. The menu path depends on the model; the steps below come from Brother's guide for the HL-L3220CDW, HL-L3240CDW, HL-L3280CDW and HL-L3295CDW. For other Brother models, check the online user's guide for your printer.

01HL-L3220CDW and HL-L3240CDW: use the arrow keys to select [Print Reports] and press OK, select [Network Config] and press OK, then press Go. The report prints.
02HL-L3280CDW and HL-L3295CDW: on the touchscreen, go to [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Print Reports] > [Network Configuration], then press [Yes]. The report prints.

What does the Brother report show?

The report shows the IP address together with the subnet mask, node name and MAC address. Brother's example reads IP address 192.168.0.5, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, node name BRN000ca0000499 and MAC address 00-0c-a0-00-04-99. Your values will differ.

The default node name starts with BRN on a wired network or BRW on a wireless network, followed by the machine's MAC address. That helps you tell which connection the printer is using.

Why does the report show the IP address as 0.0.0.0?

Brother's guide says that if the IP address on the Network Configuration Report shows 0.0.0.0, you should wait one minute and print the report again.

How do I check my computer's IP address to compare it?

Brother's FAQ for its PT-series models (PT-D800W, PT-E800W, PT-P750W, PT-P900W and PT-P950NW) pairs the printer's IP address with a check of the computer's IP address and subnet mask. These steps show the computer's address, not the printer's. On those PT models, Brother reads the printer's IP from the Communication settings in the Printer Setting Tool or from a printed printer configuration report.

01Windows 11: click Start menu > All apps > Windows Tools > Control Panel. Windows 10: click Start menu > Windows System Tool > Control Panel.
02Click Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
03Click Local Area Connection (wired) or Wireless Network Connection (wireless), then click Details. The IP address may be labelled IPv4, and the subnet mask is listed with it.
04Mac: from the Apple menu, open System Settings (or System Preferences), click Network, click Details (or Advanced), then click TCP/IP to see the IP Address (IPv4 Address) and Subnet Mask.
05For those PT models, Brother asks that the computer's subnet mask be 255.255.255.0. If yours is different, Brother says to consult a network administrator.
