Epson Error E-11
What the code means · Diagnosis at a glance
Epson error E-11 means the printer's waste-ink pad has reached the end of its rated service life. These internal pads absorb the ink used during setup charging, print-head cleaning and borderless printing, and a firmware counter estimates how full they are. When that counter hits its safety limit the printer stops printing so waste ink cannot overflow onto the electronics. Epson treats the pad as a service part; an official one-time reset utility (Windows) can let you print for a short while, but a physically saturated pad still needs to be replaced by Epson or a certified technician.

What the code means
Every Epson inkjet routes a small amount of ink into an internal absorber during initial ink charging, print-head cleaning and borderless printing. E-11 reports that the pad which holds this waste ink is at the end of its designed service life.
The reading is driven by a firmware counter (roughly, how many cleaning and priming cycles the printer has run) rather than a wet sensor. Once the counter reaches Epson's safety threshold the printer halts to stop waste ink leaking onto internal parts, a desk or the paper path.
Note that some models (including certain WorkForce and newer EcoTank units) also have a user-replaceable maintenance box. That box is a separate consumable from the internal platen pad, and swapping it does not reset the internal E-11 counter. E-11 specifically refers to the internal pad, which Epson does not treat as a user-replaceable part.
Most frequent causes
- The internal waste-ink pad counter has reached the manufacturer safety limit.
- Repeated manual head cleanings filled the pad faster than normal.
- Frequent borderless photo printing sent extra ink to the pad.
- Very high print volume across the printer's lifetime.
- On maintenance-box models, confusion between the user-replaceable box and the separate internal pad.
Quick fix: try this first
- Turn the printer off, wait about 30 seconds, then power on to confirm the code is still E-11.
- Check whether your model has a user-replaceable maintenance box; if that box is the flagged part, fit a genuine replacement.
- For the internal pad on Windows, use Epson's official one-time Maintenance Reset Utility to print for a short period while you arrange service.
- Stop sending large jobs until the pad is serviced, so waste ink cannot overflow.
Step-by-step solution
0 / 6 doneTick each step as you go. Your progress is kept while you work.
Before you start
- Have your exact model number ready (on the base or inside the cover).
- Note whether the printer is still under warranty before opening anything.
- Work on a protected surface and keep the printer level in case of waste ink.
What not to do
- ×Do not keep printing large jobs once E-11 appears. A saturated pad can overflow.
- ×Do not pour liquids into the printer to try to flush or dry the pad.
- ×Do not force internal covers or belts by hand looking for the pad.
- ×Do not assume a third-party counter reset has emptied the pad. It has not.
When to stop & call support
Stop and contact Epson or a technician if you see waste ink leaking or pooling anywhere, if the printer is still under warranty (self-service may void it), or if the official one-time reset does not apply to your model. A saturated internal pad is not a user-replaceable part.
If the error comes back
E-11 is expected to return: the official one-time utility only allows a short printing window, and any counter reset leaves the physical pad just as full. If it comes back soon after a reset, the pad is saturated and genuinely needs replacing. Arrange the Epson pad service or, on a budget model, compare that cost against a new printer.

Questions about Epson E-11
Can I just reset E-11 and keep using the printer?
Epson offers a one-time Windows reset utility that lets you print for a short period, and third-party tools can zero the counter, but neither empties the physical pad. Once it is truly saturated, resets only postpone a leak; the pad still needs servicing.
I replaced the maintenance box but E-11 is still showing. Why?
On models with a maintenance box, the box and the internal platen pad are two different parts with separate counters. E-11 refers to the internal pad, which swapping the box does not reset.
Is E-11 the same as a low-ink warning?
No. E-11 is about waste ink the printer collects internally, not the ink in your cartridges or tanks. You can have full ink and still see E-11.
Is there a Mac version of the official reset?
Epson's one-time Maintenance Reset Utility is currently Windows-only. Mac users typically need to arrange the pad service through Epson or a certified technician.
What does it mean when the ink and paper lights flash on an Epson L3250/L3210?
It depends on the pattern. If both lights flash at the same time, an ink pad is nearing or at the end of its service life. If they flash alternately, it is the borderless printing ink pad: borderless printing is not available until that pad is replaced, but printing with a border still works. In both cases Epson says to contact Epson or an authorised Epson service provider, as the pad is not a user-serviceable part. On the L3250, if a message to continue printing appears on your computer, press the B&W copy or color copy button to keep printing.
