Brother Error 46

What the code means · Diagnosis at a glance

Brother error 46 (shown on screen as Unable to Clean 46, Unable to Init 46 or Unable to Print 46) means the machine’s internal ink absorber (waste-ink pad) and flushing box are counted as full. The printer tallies every purge and flush cleaning operation and stops before waste ink can overflow inside the machine. A power cycle clears it only when a cleaning cycle was interrupted. A genuinely full absorber is not a user-purchasable part and, per Brother, must be replaced by a Brother Authorized Service Center.

May need a technicianBrother lists absorber / flushing-box replacement as a service-centre job; the part is not sold to end users.
Disconnect power firstTurn the machine off and unplug it before checking the carriage or purge area.
Ink can stainThe waste absorber holds loose ink. Wear gloves and protect surfaces if any service exposes it.
Safe to tryA simple power-off / power-on cycle is safe and clears 46 when it was only an interrupted cleaning cycle.

What the code means

Every Brother inkjet flushes a little ink into an internal absorber pad and flushing box during printing, nozzle purges and head-cleaning cycles. The firmware does not measure the pad directly. It counts how many purge and flush operations have run and estimates how full the absorber is. When that count reaches Brother’s safety threshold, the machine reports error 46 and stops so waste ink cannot overflow onto the internal electronics.

Because the estimate is based on cleaning counts, a machine can sometimes print many more pages before any ink would actually escape. Even so, Brother’s position is clear: the internal ink absorber and flushing box are not sold as user parts and should only be replaced by a Brother Authorized Service Center. Resetting the purge counter in maintenance mode only zeroes the software count. It does not empty the physical pad.

Most frequent causes

  • The purge / flush counter has reached Brother’s safety limit for the internal absorber.
  • Many manual or automatic head-cleaning cycles filled the pad faster than normal.
  • Non-Brother ink clogged the print head, forcing repeated cleaning cycles.
  • A cleaning cycle was interrupted by a power loss and left the machine in an error state.

Quick fix: try this first

  1. Turn the machine off, wait about a minute, then turn it back on. This clears 46 only if a cleaning cycle was interrupted.
  2. Open the cover and check the carriage and purge area for any paper scrap or obstruction, and remove it.
  3. If print quality is poor, confirm you are using genuine Brother ink so the printer does not run extra cleaning cycles.

Step-by-step solution

0 / 6 done

Tick each step as you go. Your progress is kept while you work.

Before you start

  • Have your exact model number ready and check whether the machine is still in warranty.
  • Work on a protected surface: waste ink stains skin, clothes and desks.
  • Note any settings you rely on before you take the machine in for service.

What not to do

  • ×Do not keep forcing manual cleaning cycles. Each one fills the absorber further.
  • ×Do not pour liquid into the machine to try to “flush” the absorber pad.
  • ×Do not treat a purge-counter reset as permanent: the physical pad keeps filling.

When to stop & call support

Stop and contact a Brother Authorized Service Center if error 46 persists after a power cycle, if you see ink leaking inside or black splotches appearing on prints, or if the machine is still under warranty. The internal absorber and flushing box are not user-replaceable parts, so opening the machine yourself risks damage and may void coverage.

If the error comes back

If 46 comes back soon after a counter reset, the physical absorber is genuinely saturated and only replacement will fix it. Frequent recurrence usually means non-Brother ink is triggering extra cleaning cycles. Switching to genuine Brother ink slows how fast the pad fills, but a saturated pad still needs a service-centre replacement.

Questions about Brother 46

Can I reset error 46 myself?

A power cycle clears it only if a cleaning cycle was interrupted. Some users reset the purge counter in maintenance mode, but that only zeroes a software counter while the physical absorber keeps filling, so Brother recommends service.

Will resetting the counter damage my printer?

It will not damage the electronics, but it hides a genuinely full pad. If the absorber is saturated, waste ink can eventually leak inside, so treat any reset as temporary only.

Why does error 46 keep coming back?

Either the pad is physically full, or non-Brother ink is forcing frequent cleaning cycles. Genuine Brother ink slows the fill rate, but a saturated absorber needs a service-centre replacement.

Is 46 the same as 4F?

No. Error 46 is about the full ink absorber. Error 4F (Unable to Print) usually points to a print-head or drive-voltage fault. See the related codes below.
