Brother Error Replace Toner
What the code means · Diagnosis at a glance
A Brother laser printer shows “Replace Toner” when the toner supply and/or the wear on the cartridge reach a level where Brother can no longer guarantee print quality. The fix is a new genuine Brother toner cartridge. If you need a few more pages first, Continue Mode lets the printer keep going after the message. The factory setting is Stop, so the printer halts at “Replace Toner” until you change it. In Continue Mode prints may come out faint, and when the display reaches “Toner Ended” the cartridge has hit its maximum operational life and Continue Mode cannot take it further. After you install a new cartridge, the setting returns to Stop on its own.

What the code means
Brother rates the print life of its toner cartridges by their ability to keep delivering guaranteed print quality. As a cartridge is used, the toner runs down and its functional components wear. “Replace Toner” appears when the toner supply and/or that material deterioration reach the point where Brother can no longer guarantee the quality of the print.
Continue Mode is the setting that decides what happens next. With the factory setting, Stop, the printer stops printing at “Replace Toner”. With Continue, it forces the printer to keep printing past the message, without any guarantee of print quality, and the pages may look faint. The display and the Status Monitor keep reporting the cartridge as “Toner Low”, “Replace Toner” or “Toner Ended” while you print in this mode.
“Toner Ended” is the last stage. It only appears when Continue Mode was enabled and the cartridge has now reached its maximum operational life. At that point the cartridge has to be replaced with a new genuine Brother toner cartridge. On LED-only models such as the HL-1212W, Toner Ended is shown by the Error LED blinking once every 1.5 seconds.
Most frequent causes
- The toner cartridge has reached the end of its estimated print life: toner used up and/or functional parts worn.
- The Replace Toner setting is on Stop, the factory default, so the printer will not print past the message.
- Continue Mode was already enabled and the cartridge has now reached its maximum operational life, so the display has moved on to “Toner Ended”.
- A new cartridge was fitted after a previous Continue Mode period, and the setting went back to Stop automatically.
Quick fix: try this first
- Check the exact wording: “Replace Toner” can be bridged with Continue Mode; “Toner Ended” means the cartridge must be replaced.
- To keep printing for now on the models in Brother’s Continue Mode FAQ (such as the HL-L2395DW or MFC-L2750DW), press Settings > All Settings > General Setup > Replace Toner > Continue, then press Home.
- On the HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW, HL-L2460DWXL and HL-L2865DW, select General Setup > Replace Toner with the arrow keys and OK, display Continue, then press Go.
- Get a new genuine Brother toner cartridge for your model; the order number is listed on Brother’s Consumables page for your printer.
Step-by-step solution
0 / 8 doneTick each step as you go. Your progress is kept while you work.
Before you start
- Note your exact model number: the Continue Mode procedure is different on the HL-L2395DW and MFC-L2750DW family, on the HL-L2405W to HL-L2865DW models with arrow keys, and on the HL-L2400D, which has LEDs only.
- Have a new genuine Brother toner cartridge for your model ready; Brother links to the order number from its Consumables & Options page for your printer.
- On the HL-L2400D, close the front cover and keep the power cord plugged in before pressing Go.
What not to do
- ×Do not count on Continue Mode for documents where print quality matters: Brother does not guarantee quality in this mode and prints may appear faint.
- ×Do not expect Continue Mode to clear “Toner Ended”; that message means the cartridge has reached its maximum operational life and must be replaced.
- ×Do not assume Continue Mode stays on after a cartridge change; it returns to Stop when a new cartridge is installed.
When to stop & call support
Stop extending the cartridge once the display or Status Monitor shows “Toner Ended”: the cartridge has reached its maximum operational life and Brother says it must be replaced with a new genuine Brother cartridge. If a message about the toner stays on after you have fitted a new cartridge, use the Contact Us section of Brother support for your model.
If the error comes back
If “Replace Toner” comes back while you are printing in Continue Mode, that is expected: Brother’s display and Status Monitor keep showing Toner Low, Replace Toner or Toner Ended as the cartridge runs down. If the printer stops at “Replace Toner” again with the next cartridge, Continue Mode went back to Stop when that cartridge was installed; switch it to Continue again if you want to print past the message.

Questions about Brother Replace Toner
Why does my Brother printer say Replace Toner?
Because the toner supply and/or the wear on the cartridge have reached the level where Brother can no longer guarantee print quality. The printer stops there while the Replace Toner setting is on Stop, which is the factory setting.
How do I override the Brother Replace Toner message?
Use Continue Mode. On the HL-L2395DW, MFC-L2750DW and the other models in Brother’s Continue Mode FAQ, press Settings > All Settings > General Setup > Replace Toner > Continue, then Home. On the HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW, HL-L2460DWXL and HL-L2865DW go to General Setup > Replace Toner, display Continue and press Go. On the HL-L2400D press Go seven times with only the Ready LED lit. Print quality is not guaranteed and pages may look faint.
What do Continue and Stop mean in the Brother Replace Toner setting?
Stop, the factory setting, makes the printer stop at “Replace Toner”. Continue forces it to keep printing after that message until the display or Status Monitor shows “Toner Ended”.
How do I reset Brother Replace Toner?
The Brother pages cited here describe two ways forward: install a new toner cartridge, after which Continue Mode returns to Stop, or switch Replace Toner to Continue to print past the message for now. They do not describe a separate reset for this message.
Can I bypass Replace Toner once the printer says Toner Ended?
No. “Toner Ended” appears after Continue Mode has already been used and the cartridge has reached its maximum operational life. Brother says the cartridge must then be replaced with a new genuine Brother toner cartridge.
