Epson Error Ink Pad

What the code means · Diagnosis at a glance

Epson’s ink-pad or "Service Required" message means the printer’s internal waste-ink absorber pads have reached the safety limit tracked by a firmware counter. The printer stops printing to prevent waste ink from overflowing inside the machine. This is the inkjet equivalent of Canon’s 5B00 waste-ink code. In warranty, Epson covers the pad service; out of warranty, an authorized provider (or Epson’s own ink-pad replacement service) handles it, and Epson offers a free reset utility for certain models.

Safe to tryThe counter reset is safe and reversible on supported models: it clears the message without other changes.
Ink can stainIf you handle a maintenance box or inspect the pads, wear gloves. Waste ink stains skin, clothes and surfaces.

What the code means

Epson inkjets route waste and unused ink into internal absorber pads during printing, head cleaning and power cycles. A firmware counter estimates how saturated those pads are. When the count reaches Epson’s safety limit, the printer shows an ink-pad or "Service Required" message and stops printing so ink cannot overflow onto internal parts. Most users never see this under normal use. It appears mainly on high-volume or very long-lived printers.

Because the message is driven by a counter, it is directly analogous to Canon’s 5B00 code. On certain models Epson provides a free Maintenance Reset Utility that sets the waste-ink pad counter back to zero, which clears the message temporarily. The physical pads keep filling, though, so a genuinely saturated pad still needs replacing. Some EcoTank models use a user-replaceable maintenance box instead of internal pads.

Most frequent causes

  • The waste-ink absorber pads have reached Epson’s firmware safety limit.
  • Very high print volume over the printer’s lifetime filled the pads.
  • Frequent head-cleaning cycles pushed more ink into the pads than normal.
  • A previous pad or maintenance-box change was done without resetting the counter.

Quick fix: try this first

  1. Confirm the exact wording: an ink-pad or "Service Required" message on the printer or in Epson software.
  2. Check whether your model uses a user-replaceable maintenance box (some EcoTank models) or internal pads.
  3. Check the printer’s warranty status before doing anything else. In warranty, contact Epson first.

Step-by-step solution

0 / 6 done

Tick each step as you go. Your progress is kept while you work.

Before you start

  • Have your exact model number and purchase date ready to confirm warranty.
  • Note whether your model has a maintenance box hatch or only internal pads.
  • Work on a protected surface and keep gloves handy in case of waste ink.

What not to do

  • ×Do not keep running heavy print jobs after you see ink pooling or leaking.
  • ×Do not pour liquids inside the printer to "flush" the pads.
  • ×Do not assume a counter reset empties the physical pad. It does not.

When to stop & call support

Stop and use authorized service if waste ink is visibly leaking from the printer, if the reset utility is not offered for your model, or if the printer is still under warranty. Opening the printer yourself to reach the internal pads may void the warranty, so let Epson or an authorized provider handle a physically saturated pad.

If the error comes back

If the message returns soon after a reset, the physical pads are almost certainly saturated and the counter reset can no longer keep up. Arrange a pad replacement through authorized service or Epson’s ink-pad service, or fit a new maintenance box on models that use one. On low-cost printers, weigh the service cost against replacing the unit.

Questions about Epson Ink Pad

Does the reset utility work on every Epson model?

No. Epson offers the free Maintenance Reset Utility only for certain models. Check Epson’s ink-pad page (wa00369) to see whether yours is supported.

Does a reset actually empty the ink pads?

No. A reset only zeroes the firmware counter and clears the message. The physical pads keep filling, so a truly saturated pad still needs replacing.

Is this the same as Canon’s 5B00 error?

It is the same concept. Both track waste ink absorbed inside the printer and stop printing when the counter hits a safety limit; only the reset method and parts differ by brand.

What does it mean when the ink and paper lights flash on an Epson L3250/L3210?

It depends on the pattern. If both lights flash at the same time, an ink pad is nearing or at the end of its service life. If they flash alternately, it is the borderless printing ink pad: borderless printing is not available until that pad is replaced, but printing with a border still works. In both cases Epson says to contact Epson or an authorised Epson service provider, as the pad is not a user-serviceable part. On the L3250, if a message to continue printing appears on your computer, press the B&W copy or color copy button to keep printing.
