Brother Error TS-02

What the code means · Diagnosis at a glance

Brother TS-02 is a code printed on the machine’s WLAN (wireless) connection report. It means the printer searched for your wireless access point or router and could not detect it. The problem is almost always on the network side (the router being off, out of range, on the wrong band, or filtering the printer) rather than a fault inside the printer. The closely related TS-01 code instead means the machine’s wireless setting is not switched on. Both are safe for you to work through before calling support.

Safe to tryYou can safely re-run the wireless setup wizard as many times as you need without harming the printer.

What the code means

When you run wireless setup or print a WLAN report, the Brother machine scans the air for the access point (router) you selected and tries to associate with it. TS-02 is the report’s way of saying that scan and connection attempt failed: the machine could not detect the access point or router at all. That is different from a wrong-password result: the printer never got far enough to be rejected because it did not find the network.

Because TS-02 is about detection, the fix lives on the network side, not inside the printer. The router may be off or rebooting, too far away or blocked by walls, broadcasting only a hidden SSID, offering a 5 GHz band the printer cannot join, or filtering unknown devices by MAC address. The sibling code TS-01 is simpler still: it means the machine’s own wireless radio is turned off (often because an Ethernet cable is plugged in), so no scan happens at all.

Most frequent causes

  • The access point or router is switched off, restarting, or out of wireless range.
  • The printer is too far away or separated from the router by walls and obstructions.
  • The network name (SSID) is hidden, so the machine cannot see it in a scan.
  • A 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz band mismatch: most Brother printers join 2.4 GHz only.
  • The router uses MAC-address filtering and the Brother machine is not on the allow list.

Quick fix: try this first

  1. Confirm the router is on, then unplug it for 10 seconds and plug it back in to power-cycle it.
  2. Move the printer to an obstruction-free spot and, during setup, keep it within about 1 metre (3 feet) of the router.
  3. Make sure you pick the 2.4 GHz network name and enter the matching password, then re-run the wireless setup wizard.

Step-by-step solution

0 / 6 done

Tick each step as you go. Your progress is kept while you work.

Before you start

  • Have your 2.4 GHz network name (SSID) and password written down and confirmed.
  • Make sure your router is powered on and other devices can reach the internet through it.
  • Disconnect any Ethernet cable from the printer before wireless setup, because a wired link can force the wireless radio off and trigger TS-01.

What not to do

  • ×Do not assume the printer is broken before you have checked the router, range and band.
  • ×Do not place the printer far from the router during initial setup, when proximity matters most.
  • ×Do not leave an Ethernet cable plugged in while running wireless setup; it can switch the wireless setting off (TS-01).

When to stop & call support

If TS-02 keeps appearing even with the printer close to a known-good 2.4 GHz router that other devices use normally, stop tweaking and look at the router itself: confirm its firmware is current and check the security type (WPA2 or WPA3) it is using. If it still will not connect, contact Brother support with the exact TS code from the WLAN report.

If the error comes back

If TS-02 returns after a working setup, the network changed underneath the printer: a new router, a changed Wi-Fi name or password, a firmware update that reset the band, or MAC filtering added later. Re-run the wireless setup wizard against the current 2.4 GHz SSID; if the router was replaced, re-add the printer’s MAC address to any new allow list.

Questions about Brother TS-02

What is the difference between TS-01 and TS-02?

TS-01 means the machine’s wireless setting is not turned on, often because an Ethernet cable is connected; unplug it and switch wireless on. TS-02 means wireless is on but the printer cannot detect your router at all.

Why can’t my Brother printer see my 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Most Brother printers only join the 2.4 GHz band. Select the 2.4 GHz network name during setup. If your router uses one shared name for both bands, check its settings so the printer can reach the 2.4 GHz radio.

Do I need to reset the printer to fix TS-02?

No. TS-02 is a network-detection issue, so a full printer reset rarely helps. Power-cycle the router, confirm the 2.4 GHz details, and re-run the wireless setup wizard instead.
